Building a sustainable photography business requires more than making strong photographs. The market changes, editorial budgets shift and the routes that once led to assignments do not always remain open. The challenge is to adapt without losing the personal work and visual point of view that made the career meaningful in the first place.

In a new BriefAsia interview, Mott Visuals co-founder Justin Mott reflects on how he responded when traditional editorial assignments became less frequent. That evolution led to three connected parts of his working life: commercial photography and video production through Mott Visuals, self-funded documentary projects, and photography education through AskMOTT.

Adapting while protecting the work that matters

The conversation explores why personal projects remain an investment in creative identity, even when they are not commissioned. Justin also discusses the importance of understanding the business behind the images: how work is produced, priced, presented and sustained over time.

Open access to cameras and education has lowered many of the profession’s old barriers. That has created more competition, but it has also made a clear point of view, reliable production and real-world experience more valuable. For Justin, adapting has meant building complementary businesses around the same foundation: visual storytelling, curiosity and trust.

For clients, that combination matters. Documentary experience helps a commercial team work naturally with real people, respond when conditions change and recognise unscripted moments that strengthen a campaign. Business experience provides the structure around that creativity: realistic schedules, clear communication, dependable crews and deliverables planned for the ways a brand will actually use them.
